Course Description and Purpose:
Junior high exploratory music will be taught in a six-week rotation this year. Throughout this six-week long class, students will explore a variety of music topics including, but not limited to: music theory, music history, vocal singing techniques, and others. Students may have an opportunity to participate in honor music events, as well as junior high music contest in the spring.
Course Materials:
Bring the following items with you to all rehearsals:
Class Expectations:
We don’t have a lot of time together to explore music, so it’s important that we utilize every minute. In order for us to conduct efficient music classes, make sure that you do the following:
Grading in Music:
Your grade will be based on participation in class. You will also have theory and history assignments to complete. Most of these will be in-class assignments. These will all count toward a student's overall grade in music. When a student misses class for any reason, they will be required to make up the assignment that was missed.
Final Project:
Students will be asked to give an in-class performance as their final project. This performance will be either a solo or small group performance of a song that could be performed in a music contest setting. Students will have the opportunity to practice multiple times throughout the course before performing their final.
Participation/Effort:
Students are expected to strive for and produce quality work by consistently doing their best and working to improve in music. Students are required to show respect for the teacher, others, and music materials.
Grading Scale:
100-93 A
92-86 B
85-78 C
77-70 D
Below 70 F
Honor Choirs:
Throughout the year, the opportunity will arise for students to participate in various honor groups. I will highly encourage students to attend these to gain the experience of performing with much larger groups, meeting students from other schools who may sometime be their friends in college, as well as being conducted by highly skilled and talented conductors.

Class Expectations:
We don’t have a lot of time together to explore music, so it’s important that we utilize every minute. In order for us to conduct efficient music classes, make sure that you do the following:
- Be in the right place, at the right time, with the right equipment. Early is on time, on time is late, and late is left.
- Do not waste class time by talking. There will be plenty of breaks when you can socialize with your buds. If you do have a comment or question during a class, wait until the appropriate time to be heard.
- Rehearse the way you would perform.
- Give the same respect to all people who may be teaching, whether it’s Miss Willard, a substitute teacher, or a guest conductor. Respect yourself and respect each other.
- Clean up after yourself!! Do not leave any trash behind. All students should assist in caring for equipment and music and maintaining a clean music facility. No food or drink is allowed in the music room during classes except water.
- Come to class with a positive attitude. It’s a proven fact that both positive and negative attitudes are contagious.
